Jason Groupp – New York and Beyond

Jason Groupp…if you haven’t heard the name, you’ve been under a rock for the last 10 years at least. He’s a husband, a father, a Guinness World Record Holder, and one of North America’s premier photographers. This man has shown more innovation in wedding and portrait photography than almost anyone in recent memory. You know that a photographer has done right, when you look at an image and can immediately identify it as a Jason Groupp picture. With Jason, that’s exactly what you get. He has defined his style, and never fails to execute it. That is the reason we admire him and his work.

Jason set a Guinness World Record for the most flashes used in one exposure at After Dark 2011, by setting up 300 LumiPro LP-160 flashes EACH triggered by a Radio Popper to make the image you see above! What’s most impressive about this, is that the frame you see here, was the FIRST ONE! Read an article about how they did it here!

But to not mention Jason’s workshops, lighting techniques DVD’s and field guides would be doing him a grave disservice. Photography students of his, (myself included) have learned off camera flash techniques that we instantly put into practice. When he speaks, you know his words come from years of experience. Jason has been described many times as both sophisticated and accessible, and is immediately recognizable by his signature bow-tie that he sports when both shooting and teaching.

Jason’s style of shooting and his ability to incorporate different parts of  New York City in his images‚ is his signature for sure. He can take a location that many would scoff at, and make incredible images that not only show his subjects at their best, but NYC as well. He has the uncanny ability convey a sense of intimacy and connection between a couple and a familiar landmark. This skillset has allowed Jason to travel the globe shooting for many esteemed clients, and kept him engaged in a busy speaking and workshop schedule.

If you’ve never seen the IHNY “Kick Ass Field Guide of Lighting Scenarios”, you need to.  For me, this is Jason’s masterpiece. He breaks down his lighting, positioning, where he places his models, right down to camera settings…this is such a no brainer tutorial resource that you should already own if you do any type of off camera flash.

We suggest that you check out the Field Guide and his DVD “25” here! Tell him ShutterCliq sent you!
